In the middle of a muddy field next to a reservoir in Kasungu District, a team of scientists are hard at work. Boxes of equipment lie scattered around a patch of dry ground, where Lancaster University’s Michelle Stanton programmes an automated drone flight into a laptop perched on a metal box. With a high-pitched whirr of rotor blades, the drone takes off and starts following the shoreline, taking photos as it goes.
Kwiputi is one of the better rural primary schools in Mangochi District, thanks to a series of changes driven by Headmaster Mustafa Pemba. Originally from a nearby village, he has a passion for improving the quality of primary education. Most heads stay at the school for two or three years, but Mustafa remained for 11 years to realise his vision.
UNICEF is constructing new school buildings for Nankhali Primary School in Lilongwe, including six classrooms, teachers houses and toilet blocks. Standard 7 pupil Aness Rodgers shares her experience of the project.
Life has not been easy for Jane Lupale. Before she got a scholarship, she used to miss school because her family couldn’t afford the fees. Once she missed school for three weeks straight because her brother failed to pay her fees. But things changed three years ago when Jane received a scholarship.
